Franz Schmidt, a brilliant cellist, studied and then taught at the Vienna Conservatory. Despite their wildly different approaches to composition he and Schoenberg had a cordial relationship and respected each other enormously. His music is not often performed, but this concert closes with his mighty piano quintet for clarinet piano and strings. This is preceded by some songs for voice and piano by Beethoven, performed by the esteemed baritone Christopher Purves.
